The WIDIA 5873416 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for high-performance metal removal in demanding machining environments. Carrying the ISO designation XNPU15T608SRMM and ANSI code XNPU1502SRMM, this double-sided, negative-rake insert features a PVD-applied TiAlN and AlCrN dual coating for extended tool life under heat and abrasion. It is 0.394 inches in inscribed circle diameter and 0.271 inches thick, with a 1/32-inch corner radius and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. The MM chip breaker geometry and right-hand orientation make it suited for use by machinists and tooling specialists running production milling operations on ferrous and difficult materials.
This insert is intended for use in milling applications targeting steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The WP40PM grade targets P and M material groups per ISO classification, with secondary suitability for S-group superalloys and titanium. It fits the VSM490-15 cutter series and is screw-held, making it a practical choice for medium to high-feed face and shoulder milling in both job shop and production settings. The XNPU insert style with a 90-degree included angle supports stable, predictable cutting behavior across a range of depths of cut.
Designed for use with the VSM490-15 cutter series and VSM490 cutter family. Compatible cutter series designation is VSM490. Insert size code is 1502. Confirm toolholder specifications before ordering.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down the spindle and secure the machine before seating or removing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to achieve proper screw torque without stripping the insert pocket. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping screw for wear or damage before installing a new insert.
