Typical lifespan for a properly maintained ozonator unit (mainly the cell or corona discharge chamber) is about 2-5 years, though many homeowners find service life of 3 years before needing major maintenance or replacement. Regular cleaning, correct salt/air supply (for systems that require it), and flow rate adherence help extend that life.

An ozone generator injects ozone gas (O₃) into the pool’s circulation water. This high-reactivity molecule rapidly oxidises organic compounds (body oils, lotions, fine debris), reducing load on filters and improving clarity. Ozone systems therefore act as a powerful supplemental sanitation device - though you’ll usually still maintain a low residual of conventional sanitizer (chlorine or bromine).

Ozone offers advantages (faster oxidation, improved water clarity, lower chemical odour) but it is not typically a full replacement for chlorine. Ozone breaks down very quickly in water, providing limited residual protection. For safe operation: you still need a primary sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) to maintain a residual while ozone does heavy oxidation work.

  • Flow rate through the ozone injector or cell.
  • Bather load, pool usage frequency and whether it’s indoor/outdoor.
  • Whether you plan to reduce conventional sanitizer levels.

Yes - some drawbacks to keep in mind:

  • Higher up-front cost and more complex installation compared to basic chlorine systems.
  • Because ozone decomposes quickly, it offers point-of-contact sanitation but lacks long-term residual—so you still need a primary sanitizer.
  • Maintenance needs (cell/UV replacement, injector cleanliness) are higher than basic systems.
  • Installation must ensure correct air/gas handling and safety, especially for indoor or enclosed equipment pads.

Yes, many residential units are suitable for DIY installation if you have experience with plumbing and equipment pad wiring. However, because correct flow, injector placement and ozone gas handling matter, for larger pools or commercial applications we recommend a qualified pool technician to ensure safety and optimum performance.
