The WALTER 6636294 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CCMT series, designed for external turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. It carries a CVD-applied multilayer TiCN/Al2O3/TiCN coating under the proprietary WMP20S grade, which extends tool life and supports higher cutting speeds on ferrous workpiece materials. The insert features a diamond 80-degree included angle, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0315-inch corner radius, and a 7-degree relief angle with positive rake geometry. The MM4 chipbreaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation during moderate roughing to semi-finishing passes. A screw-clamping hold-down method provides rigid seating in compatible toolholders.
This insert is rated for primary use on steel (ISO P25 material grade) and stainless steel (ISO M20), with secondary application on super-alloys and titanium (ISO S20). It suits CNC turning centers and manual lathes in production environments where consistent chip control and coating durability are priorities. Maximum depth of cut is 0.100 inches (3.00 mm), making it well suited to medium stock-removal and finishing passes. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both right-hand and left-hand toolholding setups without repositioning the insert.
Designed for use in CCMT-compatible screw-clamp toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Compatible toolholders must accommodate the CCMT insert shape code C with tolerance code M and clearance code C. Suitable for multi-use turning, facing, and boring applications on steel, stainless steel, super-alloys, and titanium workpieces.
Installation is performed by machining professionals or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully on the toolholder pocket face before tightening the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the pocket and screw threads for debris or wear before seating a fresh insert to ensure proper clamping force and runout control.
