The WALTER 5615075 is a solid carbide turning insert engineered for precision finishing operations on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries the ANSI designation VCMT221 and ISO designation VCMT110304, with a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape and a positive rake geometry that reduces cutting forces in difficult-to-machine materials. The WSM20 grade features a multilayer PVD coating combining TiAlN, Al2O3, and ZrCN for thermal resistance and edge integrity. A 1/64 inch corner radius and honed cutting edge style support tight surface finish requirements. The PF4 chip breaker geometry targets finishing chip control across turning, facing, boring, and back turning applications. Licensed machinists and CNC lathe operators are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert is suited for finishing passes on stainless steel and superalloy or titanium workpieces where controlled chip evacuation and edge stability are critical. The PF4 chip breaker is optimized for light to moderate depths of cut up to 0.1452 inches. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both left- and right-hand toolholders using a screw-clamp holding method. Material grade designations M20, P20, and S20 confirm suitability across ISO material groups M, P, and S, covering stainless steel, carbon and alloy steel, and superalloys or titanium. The insert is also applicable to secondary operations on steel, broadening its utility across mixed-material production environments.
Designed for screw-clamp VCMT-style toolholders accepting a 1/4 inch inscribed circle insert. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards (ANSI: VCMT221, ISO: VCMT110304). Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (ISO material codes M and S); secondary application covers steel (ISO material code P).
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not over-torque the clamp screw, as carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing to ensure proper seating and edge geometry.
