The SUMITOMO 5U00083 is a screw machine length drill bit engineered for precision drilling in ferrous materials. Built from solid carbide with a coated finish, it measures 0.4016 inches in diameter and features a 135-degree split-point angle that reduces walking and improves hole entry accuracy. The overall length is 3.6614 inches with a flute length of 1.6142 inches, making it well suited for short-reach, high-precision drilling applications. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.4331 inches in diameter and seats securely in standard drill chucks or toolholders. This bit belongs to the MDW-GS series and carries a 2xD flute-to-diameter ratio. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this bit in CNC and manual drilling operations where tight tolerances and material hardness demand carbide over high-speed steel.
This drill bit is rated for use in cast iron and steel workpieces, covering a wide range of production machining and maintenance scenarios. The screw machine length format provides increased rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection during deep entry cuts. Maximum drilling depth is 1.0118 inches. The tapered web configuration aids chip evacuation and reduces thrust load in tougher ferrous alloys. It is packaged as a single unit and is well suited for shops that replace individual bits as part of a tooling inventory program.
Designed for drilling cast iron and steel workpieces. Part of the Sumitomo MDW-GS series. Fits standard straight-cylindrical shank toolholders and drill chucks accepting an 11.00 mm shank. Diameter falls within the 0.4000 to 0.4500 inch range covered by this series.
This bit is installed by machinists in CNC machining centers or manual drill presses using a compatible straight-shank chuck or toolholder. Confirm the holder bore matches the 11.00 mm shank diameter before seating. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before changing tooling. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit, so external coolant or cutting fluid application should be used to manage heat when drilling harder steels.
