The SOUTHWIRE p50002-1a is a 16 AWG, 2-conductor stranded thermostat cable rated for plenum (CL2P) installations and general-purpose low-voltage, power-limited circuits. It ships on a 1000-foot spool in white jacket with a foil shield for signal integrity. Rated at 300 volts, this cable meets the fire-resistance requirements for air-handling plenum spaces under NFPA 90A, making it a code-compliant choice where standard CL2 cable cannot be used. Licensed HVAC technicians, electricians, and low-voltage contractors install this product in commercial and residential applications where cable must run through ceiling plenums or raised-floor air-return spaces.
This cable is suited for remote control, signaling, and power-limited circuits across a broad range of systems. Typical applications include HVAC control wiring, security systems, intercom, public address, alarm circuits, sound and audio distribution, and access control. The 16 AWG stranded conductors provide flexibility for routing through tight spaces and support longer runs with reduced voltage drop compared to smaller gauges. The shielded construction helps reject electromagnetic interference in environments where multiple cable types share a pathway.
Designed as a general-purpose CL2P plenum thermostat and control cable suitable for low-voltage power-limited circuits in HVAC, security, alarm, intercom, audio, and access control systems where plenum-rated wiring is required by code.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician or low-voltage contractor in accordance with NEC Article 800 and local amendments for power-limited circuits. Verify that the plenum rating is required by the authority having jurisdiction before substituting standard CL2 cable. De-energize all circuits at the panel before splicing or terminating conductors. Avoid sharp bends and do not exceed the cable minimum bend radius during installation to prevent damage to the foil shield and conductor insulation.
