The SGS 31172 is a double-end, four-flute square end mill ground from micrograin solid carbide and finished with an AlTiN coating. It carries a 0.0625 inch (1/16 inch) cutting diameter and a 0.125 inch (1/8 inch) length of cut, placing it firmly in the stub-length category where rigidity and minimal deflection matter most. The 30-degree right-hand spiral helix promotes efficient chip evacuation while the AlTiN coating extends tool life in elevated cutting temperatures. Designed for precision metalworking applications, this end mill is suited to CNC machining centers and manual mills operated by machinists and tooling professionals.
The SGS 31172 is appropriate for high-speed milling operations on a range of workpiece materials. Its primary material codes cover cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, steel, and heat-resistant superalloys, making it a versatile choice for job shops and production environments. The double-end design provides two usable cutting ends, extending service life between tool changes. Its straight-cylindrical shank seats cleanly in standard collet systems and end mill holders sized for 0.125 inch shanks.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and manual milling machines equipped with collet chucks or end mill holders accepting a 0.125 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for workpiece material categories coded H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, general steels, and superalloys.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully in the collet or holder and torque the drawbar or nut according to the machine and holder specifications. Confirm runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as runout at this diameter will significantly affect tool life and surface finish.
