The SANDVIK COROMANT 6398217 is a solid carbide cutoff insert from the CoroCut QD series, designed for grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This right-hand insert carries a 4.00 mm cutting width and is finished with a PVD-applied TiCN/Al2O3/TiN multilayer coating under manufacturer grade 1135, delivering wear resistance suited to a range of workpiece materials. The CM chipbreaker geometry promotes chip control in continuous grooving passes. Insert holding is by clamp, and the seat size is H. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers of this tooling component.
The 6398217 is used in turning center applications where controlled-width grooving or full parting cuts are required. Typical scenarios include production turning of steel, stainless, and similar materials where consistent chip evacuation and dimensional accuracy at the groove are critical. The CoroCut QD platform is engineered for stable, rigid clamping on dedicated QD-style toolholders. This insert is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10 units.
Designed for use with CoroCut QD series toolholders accepting an H seat size insert. Verified compatible toolholder families and machine configurations should be confirmed against the SANDVIK COROMANT CoroCut QD system documentation for the specific insert style QD designation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a full stop and lockout state per facility safety procedures. Use the designated QD clamping key or wrench to seat and secure the insert clamp to the toolholder specification. Do not exceed the recommended depth of cut or feed rate for the 1135 grade as defined in the applicable cutting data tables. Inspect the insert seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
