The RENISHAW A-5000-4158 is a CMM ball stylus designed for use with coordinate measuring machines in precision metrology applications. It features a ruby ball contact point mounted on a stainless steel stem, threaded at M2 for direct attachment to CMM probe heads and extension systems. The ball diameter measures 8 millimeters (0.3150 inches) and the overall length is 11 millimeters (0.4331 inches effective working length). Ruby is the preferred ball material in CMM work due to its hardness and resistance to wear, helping maintain dimensional accuracy over repeated measurement cycles. This stylus is appropriate for dimensional inspection tasks performed by metrology technicians and quality control professionals.
The A-5000-4158 suits dimensional inspection in manufacturing environments where a short-reach, large-ball stylus is required. It is well suited for measuring bores, slots, and surface features on machined or fabricated parts where the 8 mm ruby ball provides adequate contact area and reliable seating. The M2 thread makes it compatible with standard CMM probe body configurations commonly found on touch-trigger and scanning probe systems. It is typically installed as a single-stylus configuration or as part of a stylus cluster assembly on multi-axis CMM setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit stylus for CMM probe systems accepting M2-threaded styli. Specific compatible probe heads and extension bar systems should be verified against RENISHAW system documentation before installation.
CMM styli should be installed and removed by qualified metrology technicians or CMM operators following the CMM manufacturer's probe qualification procedures. Power down or pause the CMM and disengage the probe before changing styli to avoid damage to the probe head or strain gauge mechanism. Use the appropriate stylus torque wrench if specified by the CMM manufacturer - do not over-tighten M2 threads by hand. After installation, always re-qualify the stylus using the machine's calibration routine before resuming measurement work.
