The OSG HP253-2283 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in steel, alloy steel, and cast iron. It measures 0.2283 inches (5.80 mm) in diameter and features a 140-degree split point with R-thinned web geometry for improved centering and reduced thrust. At 66.00 mm overall length with a 28.00 mm flute length, this is a stub-length tool built for rigidity in short-hole applications. Coolant-through capability makes it well suited for high-speed CNC machining centers where heat management is critical. Right-hand cut with a regular spiral and straight cylindrical shank rounds out the design.
This drill bit is intended for production drilling environments where tool life and hole accuracy matter. The HP253 series targets ferrous materials including mild steel, alloy steel, and cast iron in both job shop and high-volume manufacturing settings. The 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and screw machine length keep deflection low when drilling from a turret, gang drill, or machining center. Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with carbide tooling. Secure the shank fully in a collet or drill chuck rated for the spindle speed being used — carbide is brittle and sensitive to side loading or improper runout. Always verify coolant flow before running at full speed when using the through-coolant feature. Do not use carbide drills in hand-drill applications or in machines with excessive spindle runout, as carbide does not flex and will fracture.
