The OSG HP253-1610 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in steel, alloy steel, and cast iron. Sized at wire gauge No. 20 (0.1610 decimal inch / 4.09 mm diameter), it features a 140-degree point angle with R-thinned web geometry for improved chip evacuation and reduced thrust at entry. The EgiAs coating includes a TiAlN drill tip finish that resists heat and extends tool life in hard-material applications. With a flute-to-diameter ratio of 3xD and a regular spiral flute form, this bit is suited for production drilling operations where consistency and tool longevity matter. Machinists and tooling professionals working in job shop or production environments specify this type of bit for short-reach, high-feed drilling cycles.
The HP253-1610 fits screw machine length drilling applications where a compact, rigid tool is required. Its shorter overall length of 2.5984 inches (66 mm) reduces deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it the correct choice for CNC machining centers, screw machines, and drill presses running ferrous workpiece materials including mild steel, alloy steel, and cast iron. The straight-cylindrical shank at 0.2362 inches (6 mm) seats in standard drill chucks and collet holders.
Designed for drilling steel, alloy steel, and cast iron workpieces. Straight-cylindrical shank is compatible with standard drill chucks and ER-style collet holders accepting 6 mm or equivalent imperial-size collets. Fits OSG HP253 series tooling specifications.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and locked out per applicable safety procedures. Verify chuck or collet bore matches the 6 mm straight-cylindrical shank before seating the bit; improper fit will cause runout and premature tool failure. When using the coolant-through feature, confirm coolant pressure and flow rate are within the machine spindle's rated specifications. Do not use this bit on non-ferrous materials such as aluminum or brass without confirming compatibility with the coating type.
