The OSG 1714601 is a spiral point STI tap designed for machine tapping operations requiring precision thread formation in Screw Thread Insert (STI) applications. Built from powdered metal with an oxide finish, this plug-chamfer tap cuts 2-56 UNC threads at 56 threads per inch using a 2-flute spiral point geometry. The spiral point pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping in production environments. With an overall length of 1.882 inches and a thread length of 0.299 inches, the 1714601 is a compact, purpose-built tap for fine-thread work in small fastener applications.
This tap is used in production machining and precision assembly operations where 2-56 UNC STI threads are required. STI taps cut oversized threads to accept helical wire inserts, which are commonly installed to repair stripped threads or to provide durable thread forms in soft or brittle base materials. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 lead threads — makes it appropriate for through-hole tapping where the tap can pass fully through the workpiece. Machinists, tool and die technicians, and maintenance professionals working with small instrument, electronic, or mechanical assemblies are the primary users of this tap.
Designed as an OEM-style STI tap for machine tapping of 2-56 UNC threads in applications requiring helical wire thread inserts; verify workpiece material and insert specification before use.
STI taps should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid requirements for the base material. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and use appropriate cutting fluid to reduce heat and extend tap life. Do not force the tap if resistance increases suddenly — back off to clear chips before continuing. Always verify the correct STI tap drill size for the specific insert being used prior to operation.
