The OSG 1625034100 is a thread forming tap in the EXOPRO XPF Series 16250, designed for cold-forming internal threads in a wide range of metallic materials. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is configured for 3/4-10 UNC threads at a 2B class of fit with an H10 thread limit and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2.5 to 3 threads. It is built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, giving it thermal and wear resistance for demanding production and maintenance applications. Licensed machinists and tool and die technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for both blind-hole and through-hole threading operations across a broad material range including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to start threads close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it a practical choice where full thread depth near the hole bottom is required. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, manual lathes, and tapping heads in production and job-shop environments.

Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size for the same thread — consult the OSG or tool manufacturer forming drill chart for the 3/4-10 UNC forming hole diameter before drilling. Always apply a compatible tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, as thread forming generates significant torque and heat. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is driven on-axis to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage. Power down and lock out any CNC or power-feed tapping equipment before changing tooling.
