The OSG 1019800 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it features 3 flutes and a plug chamfer that distributes cutting load across several leading threads for smooth entry into through-holes and moderately deep blind holes. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.75-inch thread length, this tap fits standard tapping chucks and hand tap handles used in production and maintenance work. The H7 thread limit designation indicates it is oversize-ground, making it suitable for use with thread-locking compounds or for tapping materials that spring back slightly after cutting.
This tap is intended for general-purpose tapping applications in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments. Its straight flute geometry works best in through-hole applications or shallow blind holes where chip evacuation is not a limiting concern. Material compatibility spans a broad range including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel, covering the majority of fastener hole applications encountered in mechanical assembly and repair work. It is sized for the common 8-32 thread used throughout light mechanical and electrical enclosure assembly.
Designed as a standard replacement or production tap for any application requiring 8-32 UNC internal threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, or high-carbon steel. OSG Series 102.
This tap is installed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a standard tap handle, tapping head, or CNC tapping chuck with appropriate speed and feed settings for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound to extend tool life and improve thread finish. For hand tapping, advance one full turn and back off a quarter turn periodically to break chips. Always ensure the tap is started square to the hole to avoid tap breakage and thread distortion.
