The OSG 1014600 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 8-36 UNF internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers reliable thread form in production and maintenance applications. The plug chamfer - typically 3 to 5 threads - provides a gradual cutting action that suits through-holes and moderately deep blind holes. With 4 flutes and an H2 thread limit, this tap holds tight tolerances for Class 2B and 3B fits. Overall length is 2-1/8 inches, with a 3/4-inch thread length and a shank diameter of 0.168 inches.
This tap is suited for machine-shop, maintenance, repair, and light manufacturing environments where 8-36 UNF threads are required. Material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. It is appropriate for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, tapping arms, and hand-tapping setups where controlled feed and alignment can be maintained. The straight flute design works best in through-hole and short blind-hole applications where chip evacuation is not a concern.
Designed as a standard 8-36 UNF straight flute plug tap. Compatible with aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel per OSG Series 102 specifications. Coolant-through operation is not supported.
This tap is installed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a standard tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid-tapping cycle. Before tapping, ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for 8-36 UNF to achieve the required thread engagement percentage. Secure workpieces firmly and maintain axial alignment to prevent tap breakage. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material; dry tapping is not recommended for steel.
