The OSG 1011600 is a straight flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it cuts a 3-48 UNC thread with a plug chamfer to ease entry and distribute cutting load across several leading threads. The H2 thread limit provides controlled oversize tolerance suitable for most standard 2B class-of-fit applications. With 3 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, this tap is suited for through-hole and shallow blind-hole applications where chip clearance is manageable without a spiral design. Overall length is 1-13/16 inches with a thread length of 1/2 inch.
This tap is used in production and maintenance tapping of aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. It is appropriate for manual tapping with a tap wrench or use in a drill press with a tapping attachment. Typical applications include machine component repair, fixture fabrication, and small-fastener thread creation where a 3-48 UNC thread form is required. The plug chamfer makes it a common first-choice tap when starting threads in a pre-drilled hole.
Designed as a standard replacement or production tap for any application requiring a 3-48 UNC, 2B class-of-fit internal thread in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, or high-carbon steel workpieces.
Installation is performed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a tap wrench, tapping head, or drill press tapping attachment. Always use the correct tap drill size for a 3-48 UNC thread before tapping, and apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece firmly before starting to keep the tap aligned perpendicular to the hole. Back the tap out periodically to break and clear chips, especially in deeper holes.
