The OSG 1004900 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap delivers consistent thread geometry in production and maintenance tapping applications. The 4-flute straight design provides stable cutting action and reliable chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole setups where chip packing is manageable. The H1 thread limit designation ensures close-tolerance thread fit suitable for standard fastener applications. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.875 inch thread length, this tap fits standard tap handles and machine spindle holders used in most shop environments.
This tap is suited for hand tapping and machine tapping operations in job shops, maintenance facilities, and light manufacturing settings. Its material compatibility covers a broad range of workpiece materials, making it a versatile choice for general-purpose threading work on aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. The plug chamfer - typically 3 to 5 lead threads - allows the tap to start easily in a drilled or bored hole and is the most common chamfer style selected for general tapping when the hole type is not a critical constraint.
Compatible with aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Fits standard 10-24 tap handles, tapping heads, and CNC machine spindle holders sized for the 0.194 inch shank diameter.
Machinists and maintenance technicians should ensure the tap drill hole is sized correctly for a 10-24 UNC thread before starting - an undersized hole increases the risk of tap breakage. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping; use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. When hand tapping, back the tap off periodically to break chips. Never attempt to reverse a broken tap with pliers; use proper tap extractor tooling.
