The NICHOLSON 21908N is an 8-inch flat file designed for material removal and surface finishing in both woodworking and metalworking applications. It features a double-cut face with a combination bastard and smooth cut pattern, giving the user the ability to work aggressively or refine a surface depending on the stroke angle and pressure applied. The file measures 3/4 inches wide and 1/8 inch thick with a tang end for use with a compatible file handle. At 0.21 pounds, it is a lightweight, handheld tool suited for bench work and on-site use by machinists, pipefitters, carpenters, and general trade technicians.
This file is appropriate for shaping, deburring, and smoothing metal stock, castings, welds, and wood surfaces. The flat profile makes it effective on flat and convex workpiece faces. The combo bastard and smooth cut allows a single tool to handle both stock removal and finishing passes, reducing the need to switch files mid-task. It is commonly used in HVAC fabrication, plumbing rough-in, electrical conduit fitting, and general shop maintenance.
Designed as a standard American-pattern flat file compatible with any tang-style file handle sized for an 8-inch file. Suitable for use on ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, and wood.
Always fit the tang into a proper file handle before use to prevent hand injury from an exposed tang during filing strokes. Secure the workpiece in a vise or clamp before filing to maintain control and accuracy. Do not use a file as a pry bar or striking tool, as the hardened steel is brittle and may fracture. Clean the file teeth regularly with a file card or brush to prevent pinning and maintain cutting efficiency.
