The KENNAMETAL 6178235 is a trigon-style indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable insert drills in metalcutting applications. Built from carbide with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating applied via PVD process, this insert delivers wear resistance and edge retention across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The insert carries a KC7140 manufacturer grade designation, features a GD chipbreaker, and has a neutral hand orientation. With a 1/32 inch corner radius and an 84-degree included angle, it is suited for through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations where controlled chip formation is required. Installation and replacement are handled by machining professionals and toolroom technicians.
This insert is applied in CNC turning centers and machining centers running indexable insert drill bodies that accept the DFT insert style with an insert size designation of 070408. It is appropriate for production drilling in job shop and manufacturing environments where repeatability and insert indexability reduce downtime. The 12.00 mm inscribed circle and 4.4 mm hole diameter correspond to standard DFT-body seating geometry. The neutral hand designation makes it usable in standard right-hand drill body configurations without mirrored or handed positioning requirements.

Insert replacement is performed by machining technicians with the machine powered down and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key driver as specified by the drill body manufacturer to seat and torque the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw threads for damage or debris before installing a new insert. Do not run a visibly chipped or worn insert, as insert failure under load can damage the drill body seat.
