The KENNAMETAL 1870998 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the industry designation DPMT32505LF in the KC5010 manufacturer grade. It features a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) TiAlN coating that delivers high wear-resistance across a range of workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, and superalloys. The insert has a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a screw-on holding method. The LF chip breaker geometry is engineered for finishing and light machining operations. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 0.0079-inch corner radius, this insert suits precision turning work where tight tolerances and surface finish are priorities.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring on CNC and manual lathes in both production and job-shop environments. It is well-suited for machining steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N), and superalloys and titanium (S). The positive rake and positive side clearance reduce cutting forces, making the insert effective on lighter cuts where workpiece integrity and dimensional accuracy are critical. The screw-on mounting method secures the insert firmly in compatible DPMT-style toolholders.
Designed for use in screw-on DPMT-style toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a 0.1732-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and screw specification before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified torx or hex key to drive the clamping screw to the recommended seating feel — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and will crack under excess clamp load. Inspect the toolholder pocket and screw thread for wear or debris before seating a fresh insert.
