The KENNAMETAL 1017631 is a tension-style tapping chuck designed for use in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and tapping machines where controlled thread-cutting performance is required. It features a 1 inch straight shank and a Double Angle Tap collet system using the L collet series. The chuck projects 1.59 inches from the spindle face and accommodates a nose diameter of 1.5 inches. Maximum tap capacity reaches 7/8 inch for standard taps and 1/2 inch for pipe taps. The tension mechanism allows axial float to synchronize feed rate with thread pitch, reducing tap breakage during operation. Licensed machinists and tool-room technicians are the primary installers.
This tapping chuck is suited for production and job-shop environments running ferrous and non-ferrous tapping applications. The straight shank configuration mounts directly into compatible spindle holders or tool blocks. With a minimum collet capacity starting at number 0 or 1/16 inch pipe tap and extending to M24 or 7/8 inch, the chuck covers a broad range of tap sizes in a single holder. The 3-3/4 inch shank length provides adequate engagement depth for most standard machine tool spindles. Applications include through-hole and blind-hole tapping in general machining, mold-and-die work, and production part manufacturing.
Designed as an OEM-style tapping chuck for use in machine tool spindles accepting a 1 inch straight shank. Compatible with L collet series Double Angle Tap collets. Accepts taps from number 0 through 7/8 inch and 1/16 inch through 1/2 inch pipe tap sizes.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with machine tool setup procedures. Disconnect and lock out machine power before inserting or removing the chuck from the spindle. Verify shank engagement depth and drawbar torque per the machine tool manufacturer specifications before operation. Do not exceed the published maximum tap capacity for the collet in use, as overloading the collet can cause tool pull-out or tap breakage.
