The KENNAMETAL 1017629 is a tension-style tapping chuck designed for precision tapping operations on CNC machining centers and other machine tool spindles. It accepts a 1-inch straight shank and delivers a projection of 1.47 inches, keeping the tap close to the spindle face for improved rigidity. The K-series double angle tap collet system provides secure tap retention across a wide range of tap sizes, from a minimum collet capacity of No. 0 or 1/16-inch pipe tap up to a maximum of 5/8 inch. This chuck is installed by machinists and tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments where consistent thread quality is required.
This tapping chuck is suited for rigid and floating tension tapping applications in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The straight shank design interfaces directly with compatible spindle toolholders. The tension adjustment provides 0.75 inch of axial float, compensating for minor pitch synchronization errors between the machine spindle and the tap feed rate. Pipe tap capacity reaches 1/8-inch maximum, making it appropriate for light pipe threading operations as well as standard inch and metric tap sizes up to M16.
Designed for use with K-series double angle tap collets. Compatible tap sizes range from No. 0 and 1/16-inch pipe tap at minimum up to 5/8 inch and 1/8-inch pipe tap at maximum, with metric coverage from M1 through M16. Verify spindle bore and toolholder interface specifications before installation to confirm straight shank fitment.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine spindle fully de-energized and locked out per applicable LOTO procedures. Ensure the collet and tap shank are clean and free of chips or coolant residue before seating the collet in the chuck body. Do not exceed the rated maximum tap capacity for the collet installed. Confirm axial tension setting is appropriate for the tap pitch before beginning a production run.
