The KENNAMETAL 1017581 is a tension and compression tapping chuck designed for rigid tapping applications on machining centers and CNC drilling equipment. Built on a 0.75-inch straight shank with a 5.125-inch shank length, this chuck uses a Double Angle Tap collet system with a J-series collet to hold taps from a No. 0 minimum up to 0.5 inches maximum capacity, and pipe taps at 1/8 inch. The 0.19-inch compression float and 0.56-inch tension float allow the chuck to compensate for minor feed-rate variances, reducing tap breakage and improving thread quality in production environments. A 0.85-inch nose diameter and 1.5-inch projection keep the working envelope compact. This chuck is installed and serviced by machinist-trade and CNC setup professionals.
This tapping chuck suits production machining operations where consistent thread quality is required across high-cycle runs. It is appropriate for use in vertical and horizontal machining centers, drill presses with tapping capability, and turret lathes equipped for live tooling. The J-series collet compatibility makes collet swaps straightforward in shops already running J-series tooling. It is well suited for threading ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces where repeatable tap engagement and float compensation are priorities. No through-coolant capability is present, so flood or mist cooling applied externally is the standard approach for heat management during tapping.
Designed as an OEM-style tapping chuck for use with J-series Double Angle Tap collets on machining centers and CNC drilling equipment accepting a 0.75-inch straight shank. Accepts taps from minimum No. 0 (M1 metric equivalent) up to 0.5 inches (M12 metric equivalent).
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped before chuck engagement or collet swaps. Ensure the straight shank is clean and free of burrs before seating in the spindle holder to achieve proper concentricity. Follow the machine tool manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety standards when selecting drawbar torque and collet tightening procedures. Do not operate without the collet and tap fully seated and secured.
