The KENNAMETAL 1017012 is a solid carbide shim designed for use with indexable cutting tools in milling and turning applications. Shims of this type seat beneath the insert in the tool pocket, providing a hardened backing surface that protects the pocket face from cutting forces and extends tool body life. This SM-style shim is compatible with square indexable inserts and measures 0.188 inches thick with an inscribed circle of 0.316 inches (8.03 mm). It is typically installed by machinists and tooling technicians working with indexable turning or milling toolholders that require a replaceable seat pad.
This shim is suited for both milling and turning operations where a square insert is used. It is commonly specified during toolholder setup, insert change intervals, or whenever a pocket seat shows wear or damage. The SM shim style is a standard seat configuration used across a range of indexable toolholder bodies. Minimum order quantity is 10 units, with each package containing 1 piece.
Designed as a replacement SM-style shim for indexable milling and turning toolholders accepting square inserts with an 8.03 mm inscribed circle.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians during indexable toolholder maintenance or insert changeover. The toolholder must be removed from the spindle or turret and all cutting forces relieved before accessing the insert pocket. Seat the shim flat against the pocket floor before securing the insert and clamp hardware. Inspect the shim for cracks or deformation at each insert change and replace as needed to maintain proper insert support.
