The ISCAR 6492494 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision parting and grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the GIMY insert style with grade IC8250 and an Al2O3 PVD coating, this insert delivers controlled cutting performance on stainless steel and carbon steel workpieces. The neutral hand orientation and 3.00 mm cutting width make it a straightforward drop-in for standard Cut-Grip toolholding systems. A 7-degree positive rake angle reduces cutting forces, and the Y-style chip breaker promotes reliable chip control during groove cycling.
This insert is suited for external grooving and parting on small-to-medium diameter workpieces in production turning environments. Primary target materials are stainless steel and carbon steel, corresponding to ISO material groups M and P. The IC8250 grade combines a PVD-applied Al2O3 coating with a carbide substrate, giving it wear resistance appropriate for interrupted cuts and general-purpose groove profiling. It is typically installed by CNC machinists and tool-and-die technicians in shops running high-mix turning work.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholding systems that accept the GIMY insert style in size 304. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and clamp type before installation.
This insert is seated and clamped mechanically — no brazing or adhesive is required. Power down the machine and lock out the spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key for the clamp screw and do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and will crack under excessive clamping force. Verify insert seating and edge condition before resuming cuts.
