The ISCAR 6405490 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision groove cutting in demanding machining environments. It carries the ING3156 insert style with IC808 grade and features a PVD-applied multi-layer AlTiN, TiAlN, and TiN coating that provides thermal resistance and extended tool life. The insert delivers a cutting width of 3.96 mm (0.156 inches) and a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm (0.150 inches). Left-hand orientation, positive rake geometry, and a 0.18 mm corner radius make it well-suited for consistent, controlled grooving passes. This insert is part of ISCAR's Notch-Grip series and is installed by CNC machinists and tooling specialists in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is used in grooving, parting, and notching operations across a broad range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, high-temperature alloys, and non-ferrous materials — corresponding to ISO material groups P, M, K, S, and H. It is double-ended, allowing use of both cutting edges before replacement, which extends insert service life and reduces per-part tooling cost. Typical applications include OD grooving on turning centers and CNC lathes requiring precise groove geometry and repeatable depth control.
Designed for use in Notch-Grip series toolholders accepting ING-style inserts with size code 3156. Compatible across ISO workpiece material groups H, K, M, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer. Verify toolholder series and insert seat dimensions before installation.
This insert is installed and indexed by qualified CNC machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert key recommended by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamping screw. Inspect the insert seat and clamping mechanism for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper support and accurate geometry.
