The ISCAR 6405217 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Cut-Grip series, designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries the GPV4356 style designation with an IC8250 manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied Al2O3 coating that provides wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The cutting width is 4.03 mm (0.1587 inches) and the maximum depth of cut is 3.42 mm (0.1346 inches). The neutral hand orientation suits standard right-hand turning setups. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments.
The 6405217 is suited for grooving and cut-off work in stainless steel and steel workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material codes M and P. The positive rake geometry and 7-degree rake angle reduce cutting forces, which is particularly valuable when machining stainless steel to minimize work hardening at the groove wall. The clamp-style insert holding method keeps the insert securely registered in compatible Cut-Grip toolholders during interrupted cuts and high-feed passes. Typical applications include O-ring groove machining, snap-ring grooves, and parting operations on turned components.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders that accept the GPV insert style in size 4356. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO M) and steel (ISO P).
Insert replacement should be performed with the machine spindle stopped and all axis motion locked out per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate ISCAR clamping key or torx wrench specified for the Cut-Grip toolholder to seat and secure the clamp; do not overtighten by impact or improvised tools. Verify insert orientation and seating fully in the pocket before resuming cuts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamp for wear or damage whenever inserts are changed.
