The ISCAR 6405060 is a solid carbide grooving insert carrying the manufacturer designation GIP247020P in grade IC830. It is designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features a 2.46 mm (0.097 inch) cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 5.00 mm (0.197 inch). The PVD-applied AlTiN and TiN coating combination delivers heat resistance and edge retention at elevated cutting speeds. A double-ended geometry maximizes usable cutting edges per insert, reducing cost per edge in high-volume turning environments. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and CNC programmers working in production turning specify this insert for demanding material removal tasks.
This insert is engineered primarily for cutting superalloys and titanium alloys, with ISO material codes M, P, and S, making it well suited for aerospace, medical, and precision-machined component manufacturing. The Cut-Grip series self-grip holding method provides secure insert seating without additional clamping hardware in compatible toolholders. The P chip breaker geometry supports positive rake cutting action at a 7-degree rake angle, which reduces cutting forces and helps manage chip flow in difficult-to-machine materials. Typical applications include groove turning, face grooving, and shallow parting on bar stock and turned blanks.
Designed for use in ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders that accept the GIP 247020 insert style with a self-grip holding method. Confirm toolholder compatibility with the ISO code GIP 2.47-0.20 before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a locked-out, zero-energy state. Use the appropriate ISCAR insert key or torx driver specified for the Cut-Grip toolholder; do not use improvised tools that may damage the self-grip seat. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Verify runout and cutting edge position with a dial indicator or tool presetter before returning the machine to cycle.
