The ISCAR 6405001 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Cut-Grip series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries ISCAR grade IC830 with a PVD-applied AlTiN and TiN coating, delivering heat and wear resistance suited to difficult-to-machine materials. The GDMW24W insert style features a 2.39 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 1.5 mm, and a positive 7-degree rake angle that reduces cutting forces. A 0.18 mm corner radius and double-ended configuration add to the value per insert. This part is installed by machinists and CNC setup technicians working in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is intended for grooving, parting, and profiling operations where tight groove widths and controlled depth of cut are required. Its primary workpiece material designations cover superalloys, titanium, and steel, making it a practical choice for aerospace, medical, and precision-manufacturing applications. The neutral hand orientation accommodates standard grooving toolholders in the Cut-Grip system. The double-ended design allows the insert to be indexed to a second cutting edge, extending tool life before replacement.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders that accept GDMW-style inserts with a size 24 designation. Compatible with turning and grooving operations on superalloys, titanium, and steel workpieces as indicated by ISO material codes M, P, and S.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the toolholder removed from the turret or secured before seating or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or clamping key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp to the correct seating torque per the toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to ensure accurate positioning and prevent premature edge failure.
