The ISCAR 6404278 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the GIMY840FY insert style designation and runs in the IC8250 grade, a CVD-coated carbide with an Al2O3 finish engineered for wear resistance at elevated cutting temperatures. The insert delivers an 8 mm cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 4 mm, making it well suited for medium-depth grooving passes. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both left-hand and right-hand toolholders within the Cut-Grip clamping system. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, production turning, and contract machining facilities are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert is built for cutting stainless steel and carbon steel workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material groups M and P. The FY chip breaker geometry promotes positive chip control and helps reduce built-up edge on gummy austenitic alloys. The full corner radius of 4 mm and a 7-degree positive rake angle reduce cutting forces and improve surface finish on profiled grooves. It is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes within its rated depth range of 4 mm to 5 mm, making it a versatile choice in a single-insert turning program.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series clamping toolholders that accept the GIMY 840 insert size. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry matches the GIMY insert style before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for the clamp screw. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamp for chips or debris that could prevent full insert seating, as improper seating will cause premature insert failure or dimensional error. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut for the insert grade and chip breaker combination.
