The ISCAR 6404238 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the GDMW24W insert style with an IC254 manufacturer grade, this double-ended insert features a PVD-applied TiN coating and a positive 7-degree rake angle that promotes clean chip evacuation and reduced cutting forces. It holds a cutting width of 2.4 mm and a maximum depth of cut of 18 mm, making it well suited for medium-depth grooving passes. The self-grip holding method provides secure, repeatable seating without additional clamping hardware. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert is part of the Cut-Grip series and is engineered for grooving applications in metalworking environments, including turning of steel, stainless steel, and other materials where TiN-coated carbide grades perform effectively. The neutral hand orientation allows use in standard straight-grooving setups. With a maximum depth of cut range of 10 mm to 20 mm and a cutting height of 5.5 mm, it fits a broad range of grooving toolholders accepting GDMW-style inserts. The chip breaker designation W is built into the insert geometry to assist with chip control during interrupted or continuous grooving cuts.
Designed for use with Cut-Grip series toolholders that accept GDMW-style inserts with a size code of 24. Conforms to ISO 13399 standards and carries ISO code GDMW 2.4. Verify toolholder compatibility with the insert size code and cutting width before installation.
Insert replacement and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and in a safe lockout state. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when securing the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and avoid premature insert failure. Never force an insert into a pocket that shows signs of damage or dimensional wear.
