The ISCAR 6404103 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for use in Cut-Grip style toolholders on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the GIMF508F geometry in grade IC808, it delivers a 5 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3 mm, making it well suited for precision external and face grooving operations. The insert is PVD-coated with an AlTiN, TiAlN, and TiN multilayer finish, which provides thermal resistance and extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. A positive rake angle of 7 degrees and the F chip breaker geometry work together to control chip flow and reduce cutting forces during interrupted or continuous grooving passes. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop turning environments.
This insert is rated for universal primary workpiece materials, covering ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S. That range includes hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. It fits the Cut-Grip self-grip insert holding system, which clamps the insert mechanically without a top clamp, keeping the chip flow path clear. Typical applications include OD grooving, face grooving, and light parting on turned components where a 5 mm groove width and up to 3 mm depth are required. The ISO code for this insert is GIMF 508, and the chip breaker designation is F.
Designed for use in ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders that accept the GIMF 508 insert size. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and insert seat dimensions before installation. The ISO code GIMF 508 can be used to cross-reference compatible holders in the ISCAR catalog.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state. Use the appropriate ISCAR torx or hex key specified for the Cut-Grip clamping mechanism — do not use substitute tools that may damage the clamping slot or insert seat. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination will affect insert stability and surface finish. Dispose of used carbide inserts in accordance with local regulations for metallic waste.
