The ISCAR 6403178 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a 0.1181 inch (3.00 mm) cutting width and carries the IC908 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for elevated wear resistance and thermal stability at high cutting speeds. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard Cut-Grip toolholders. The J chip breaker geometry promotes positive rake cutting action, helping control chip flow and reduce cutting forces across a broad range of workpiece materials. Machinists and CNC programmers working in production turning environments will recognize this insert as a direct-fit component for Cut-Grip grooving systems.
This insert is suited for use in turning operations targeting materials classified under ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S, covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, general steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. The universal primary workpiece material designation reflects its multi-material capability within a single insert grade. Typical applications include grooving, plunge-turning, and light parting on medium-to-small diameter workpieces in both job shop and production environments. The single-end configuration delivers consistent cutting edge geometry for predictable insert indexing.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders accepting GIM insert style, size 3J. Compatible with workpiece material groups H, K, M, P, and S per ISO classification. Confirm toolholder pocket specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing any insert. Seat the insert fully and evenly in the toolholder pocket and secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert seating surface and pocket for chips or debris before clamping to avoid insert rocking or premature edge failure.
