The ISCAR 6403170 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the GIM3-8RA geometry in ISCAR grade IC908, it features a TiAlN PVD coating that provides high wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert has a right-hand cutting orientation, a 0.1181 inch cutting width, and a positive rake angle of 7 degrees. An 8-degree lead angle and submicron carbide substrate combine to deliver consistent edge integrity at elevated cutting speeds. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments.
This insert is suited for grooving operations on materials classified under universal workpiece categories, including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, high-temperature alloys, and hardened materials corresponding to material codes H, K, M, P, and S. It fits into the Cut-Grip clamping system, which uses a clamp and screw holding method to secure the insert in compatible ISCAR Cut-Grip toolholders. The W chip breaker geometry supports effective chip control across a range of depths of cut and feed rates typical in production turning.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders that accept the GIM insert style in size code 38 with a clamp and screw holding method. Conforms to ANSI code GIM 3-8RA IC908 and ISO 13399 standards.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a safe, powered-down state and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate ISCAR torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the insert. Never operate the insert in a toolholder not designed for the Cut-Grip system, as improper seating can cause insert failure or workpiece damage.
