The ISCAR 6403168 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the IC908 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, delivering wear resistance and thermal stability across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 0.0866 inch (2.20 mm) cutting width, a right-hand orientation, and a positive rake angle of 7 degrees. The A-style chip breaker supports controlled chip flow during moderate to aggressive grooving passes. Machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments install this insert into compatible Cut-Grip toolholders.
This insert is suited for turning applications involving universal workpiece materials, covering ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S. That range includes carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous materials, and high-temperature alloys. The single-end design is intended for precision grooving where consistent width tolerance and surface finish are required. The IC908 grade is a general-purpose PVD carbide grade, making this insert a practical choice for both interrupted and continuous grooving cuts at moderate cutting parameters.
Designed for use with ISCAR Cut-Grip series toolholders accepting GIM 22J8 style inserts. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number for this insert is GIM 2.2J-8RA. Verify toolholder pocket specifications before installation.
This insert is installed and replaced by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before accessing the turret or toolholder. Use the correct torque wrench and clamping screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Confirm insert seating and alignment before resuming cutting operations.
