The ISCAR 5505289 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in ISCAR DR-TWIST series indexable drills. Carrying the IC908 manufacturer grade and applied with a PVD coating process, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert features a square SOMT style geometry with a 90-degree included angle and a 0.80 mm corner radius, giving it reliable edge strength during drilling operations. With an inscribed circle of 0.5000 inches (12.70 mm) and a thickness of 0.1874 inches, it meets standard dimensional requirements for compatible DR-TWIST toolholders. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for general-purpose and production drilling in both light and heavy industrial environments. Its universal primary workpiece material designation covers ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S, making it applicable across cast iron, steel, stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, and non-ferrous materials. The SOMT style with DT chipbreaker geometry supports effective chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations. It is equally appropriate for job shop use and high-volume production runs where consistent hole quality and insert repeatability are required.
Designed for use in the ISCAR DR-TWIST series indexable drill bodies that accept SOMT12 style inserts with a 0.2200 inch hole diameter. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and insert size code 12 04 08 before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any indexable insert. Use the correct torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to achieve proper clamping torque — do not overtighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket for debris, damage, or wear before seating a new insert, and index or replace inserts at the first sign of edge breakdown to prevent workpiece damage.
