The ISCAR 3337228 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision groove turning and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the PENTA17N157P010P geometry in the PentaCut series, this insert features a 1.57 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 4 mm. The IC1008 grade substrate is coated via PVD with a TiAlN and Titanium Nitride finish, delivering thermal resistance and edge stability across a broad range of workpiece materials. The positive rake geometry and P-style chip breaker support controlled chip evacuation during grooving passes. This insert is installed and changed out by CNC machinists and turning tool specialists in production and job-shop environments.
The 3337228 insert is suited for grooving applications across universal workpiece material groups, covering ISO material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. This broad material compatibility makes it applicable to carbon steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous metals, high-temp alloys, and hardened materials. It is typically deployed in external grooving or parting operations where consistent width control and depth repeatability are required. The screw-clamping holding method provides secure insert retention in compatible PentaCut toolholders during interrupted or continuous groove cuts.
Designed for use in compatible PentaCut series toolholders that accept the PENTA 17N insert style. Consult ISCAR toolholder documentation to confirm seat and clamping compatibility before installation.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with indexable turning tooling. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before accessing the toolholder. Use the correct torque driver or wrench specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the clamping screw — do not overtighten or substitute fasteners. Verify insert seating and orientation against the toolholder pocket before resuming machining operations.
