The ISCAR 3318166 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision groove turning and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the Heliface series HFPL 4004 specification, it delivers a 4 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 2 mm, with a 0.40 mm corner radius and a 7-degree positive rake angle. The insert carries an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process, which provides thermal resistance and extended tool life when cutting difficult materials. It is a left-hand configuration intended for use by machinists and tooling specialists in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is engineered for grooving and profiling of superalloys and titanium, workpiece material code S under ISO classifications. The Heliface series geometry and IC806 submicron carbide grade are specifically suited to high-temperature alloys where edge integrity and coating adhesion are critical. Typical applications include aerospace component machining, medical implant turning, and energy sector part production where tight groove tolerances and surface finish consistency are required. The positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces, making it appropriate for slender workpieces or setups with limited rigidity.
Designed for use in ISCAR Heliface series toolholders accepting HFPL 4004 style inserts. Intended primarily for grooving superalloys and titanium as designated by primary workpiece material code S. Verify toolholder seat geometry and clamping method before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and clamping specifications. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket for damage, chips, or contamination before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating for the insert grade and geometry in use.
