The IRWIN IR50520 is a spear-point glass and tile drill bit designed for clean, controlled penetration through glass, ceramic tile, and similar hard, brittle surfaces. The bit is tipped with tungsten carbide, which provides the hardness needed to score and drill these materials without causing fractures or edge chipping. At 5/16 inch diameter, it suits a range of common hole-sizing tasks on tile installations, glass panels, and similar applications. This bit is sold individually and is suited for use by tile setters, glaziers, plumbers, and other trade professionals who regularly drill into non-wood hard surfaces.
This bit is appropriate for residential and light commercial applications where holes must be drilled through ceramic tile, porcelain, or glass without cracking the substrate. Typical use cases include installing fixture mounting hardware through tiled walls, creating penetrations in glass panels, and drilling anchor holes in tile backsplashes or flooring. The 5/16 inch diameter makes it a practical choice for standard anchor and fastener clearance holes in tile work.
Designed for use in standard rotary drills and drill-drivers when used at low speed without hammer mode. Suitable for drilling glass, ceramic tile, and porcelain tile surfaces.
This bit must be used in rotary mode only — never engage the hammer function when drilling glass or tile, as impact force will crack the material. A licensed tile setter or general tradesperson should apply steady, moderate pressure and use water or cutting fluid as a coolant to extend tip life and reduce the risk of thermal cracking in the substrate. Mark the drill point with tape or a center punch guide to prevent the bit from walking on smooth surfaces before the pilot hole is established.
