The IRWIN IR50512 is a tungsten carbide tipped glass and tile drill bit designed for clean, controlled penetration through hard, brittle surfaces including ceramic tile, glass, and similar materials. The spear point geometry concentrates cutting force at the center of the bit, reducing the risk of surface cracking or chipping during entry. At 3/16 inch in diameter, this bit is well suited for pilot holes, fixture anchoring, and smaller penetrations in tile work. It is sold individually and is a standard addition to a tile installer's or plumber's drill kit when finish surfaces must be penetrated without damage.
This bit is used in residential and light commercial applications where ceramic tile, glass panels, porcelain, or similar hard surfaces require drilling. Common install scenarios include bathroom and kitchen tile work, glass shelf mounting, and fixture rough-in penetrations through tiled walls. It is appropriate for use by tile setters, plumbers, and general contractors working on finish surfaces where standard twist bits would cause fracturing or spalling.
Designed for use on glass, ceramic tile, porcelain, and similar hard, brittle surface materials as an OEM-style spear point glass and tile drill bit.
Drilling glass and tile requires a slow drill speed and consistent, light feed pressure to avoid surface fracture. A licensed tile installer or general tradesperson should use a variable-speed drill and keep the bit cool with water or cutting fluid during use. Never apply high torque or impact mode when drilling glass or glazed tile surfaces. Mark the drill point with tape or a center punch guide to prevent bit walking on smooth surfaces.
