The IRWIN HANSON 7223 is a hex rethreading die designed to restore damaged or corroded external threads to their original specification. Built from carbon steel, this die cuts a 1/4-28 UNF right-hand thread profile. Rethreading dies are used to chase and clean existing threads on bolts, studs, and threaded rod where cross-threading, rust, or mechanical damage has compromised the thread form. The hex body allows a standard wrench or ratchet to apply controlled torque during use. This tool is a practical addition to any service technician's thread repair kit across HVAC, plumbing, and general mechanical trades.
The 7223 is suited for light-duty thread restoration work on fasteners and fittings with a 1/4-28 UNF thread form. This fine-thread specification is commonly found in instrument panels, access cover hardware, and precision mechanical assemblies in residential and light commercial equipment. Technicians use rethreading dies when a full thread tap-and-die set is not required and a quick field repair is the priority.
Designed as an OEM-style rethreading tool for 1/4-28 UNF external threads on bolts, studs, and threaded fittings in mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical service applications.
Rethreading dies are installed by licensed or experienced trade technicians performing fastener repair. Before use, clean the damaged thread area and apply cutting oil to reduce friction and extend die life. Start the die squarely on the fastener to avoid cross-threading during the repair pass. Inspect the restored thread with a mating nut before returning the fastener to service.
