The HERTEL SDD43274703 is a high-speed steel step drill bit designed for drilling multiple hole sizes in a single tool. With 13 stepped hole sizes ranging from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch in diameter and a 3/8 inch step length, this bit eliminates the need to swap tools during sheet metal, conduit knockout, or panel work. The 1/4 inch round shank with three flats reduces slipping in the chuck. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating over the high-speed steel body increases surface hardness and extends cutting life on steel, aluminum, and similar materials. Licensed electricians, HVAC techs, and plumbers reach for step bits like this when punching clean, burr-minimal holes through sheet metal enclosures and thin-gauge panels.
This step drill bit is well suited for residential and light commercial trade work involving electrical panels, junction boxes, ductwork, and plumbing access holes through sheet metal or thin steel. The 13-step profile covers the hole sizes most commonly needed when drilling conduit knockouts, sensor grommets, drain fittings, and low-voltage penetrations without changing bits. It fits standard 3-jaw drill/driver chucks that accept 1/4 inch round shanks.
Designed as a general-purpose step drill bit for use with standard 3-jaw drill or driver chucks accepting a 1/4 inch round shank with flats.
Step drill bits are installed by electricians, HVAC technicians, and plumbers for field drilling of sheet metal, enclosures, and thin panels. Always de-energize and lock out electrical panels before drilling. Use a center punch to prevent bit walking on smooth metal surfaces. Apply cutting fluid or lubricant on harder materials to preserve the TiN coating and extend bit life.
