The HERTEL SD82688755 is a 9-step cobalt step drill bit designed for drilling multiple hole sizes with a single tool. Built from M35 cobalt high-speed steel, it handles harder materials and higher heat than standard HSS bits. The hex shank with one flat provides a quick-change, no-slip grip in compatible drivers and drill chucks. Hole sizes step from 1/4 inch up to 3/4 inch in 1/16-inch increments, covering nine distinct diameters. Overall length is 2-3/16 inches. The bright, uncoated finish is standard for this general-purpose series. HVAC techs, electricians, and sheet metal workers commonly reach for step drills when punching clean holes in thin-gauge metal panels, electrical enclosures, and conduit knockouts.
This bit is suited for multipurpose shop and field use across light-gauge steel, aluminum, and similar thin materials. It fits residential and light commercial applications where a range of hole sizes is needed without swapping bits. Typical install scenarios include electrical panel work, HVAC cabinet penetrations, and plumbing rough-in through thin metal framing. The concave flute geometry helps clear chips and reduce heat buildup during the step-drilling process. It belongs to the HSTH series and ships individually as a single-piece unit.
Designed as a general-purpose step drill bit for use in standard hex-shank quick-change drill drivers and 3/8-inch or larger keyed or keyless chucks suitable for multipurpose metal drilling applications.
Step drill bits are typically used by electricians, HVAC technicians, and sheet metal fabricators working on thin-gauge metal. Always disconnect power to any enclosure or panel before drilling. Use a center punch to prevent walking on smooth metal surfaces. Apply light, steady feed pressure and avoid forcing the bit through material faster than the flutes can clear chips, as excess heat will shorten cobalt tool life.
