The HERTEL 16ER32UNJHG225T is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UNJ thread cutting at 32 threads per inch. Manufactured to the HG225TR grade, this insert features a physical vapor deposition (PVD)-applied TiAlN coating that improves heat resistance and extends edge life in demanding threading operations. The 16 ER insert style seats in standard laydown toolholders. With a 3/8-inch (0.3750 inch) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1460 inches, it is sized for consistent, repeatable thread form on external workpiece diameters. Machinists and CNC operators in aerospace, defense, and precision machining shops rely on inserts of this specification for controlled-root UNJ thread profiles.
This insert is applied in right-hand external threading operations where UNJ thread standards are required, most commonly in aerospace fastener and hydraulic fitting applications. The UNJ thread form incorporates a controlled radius at the root, which reduces stress concentration compared to standard UN threads. It is suited for use on CNC lathes and turning centers equipped with 16 ER-compatible threading toolholders. Typical workpiece materials include alloy steels, stainless steels, and high-temperature alloys where a TiAlN-coated carbide grade provides the wear resistance needed for production threading.
Designed for use in 16 ER-style laydown threading toolholders capable of accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Produces external UNJ 32 TPI threads per the UNJ thread standard. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against the toolholder manufacturer's insert specification chart.
Insert seating and torque should follow the toolholder manufacturer's specifications for 16 ER-style pockets. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris prior to seating a new insert. Verify thread pitch and form with a thread gauge after the first pass before committing to a production run.
