The HERTEL 16704843 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding industrial and machining applications. Built from solid carbide, this bit delivers the rigidity and heat resistance required when working with difficult-to-machine materials. It measures 1-11/16 inches overall length with a matching 1-11/16 inch flute length, making it well suited for short-reach, high-precision holes. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements compared to a conventional 118-degree point. The bright/uncoated finish is compatible with a wide range of cutting fluids. Right-hand cutting direction. Two-flute slow spiral design supports chip evacuation in tough materials.
This drill bit is intended for use in production machining environments where close-tolerance holes are required in hard or abrasive workpiece materials. The slow spiral flute geometry is specifically suited for drilling cast iron, nickel alloys, stainless steel, titanium alloys, and tool steel. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and screw machine setups where a stubby, rigid tool is preferred over jobber-length alternatives to minimize deflection and maintain dimensional accuracy in precision bores.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement drill bit in wire gauge size 48 (0.0760 inch decimal equivalent) for use in applications requiring solid carbide tooling in the HSSC135-SS series.
Installation and use of carbide drill bits should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with speeds, feeds, and workholding practices for carbide tooling. Ensure the spindle and chuck or collet are clean and true before seating the straight shank to prevent runout. Carbide is brittle — avoid side loading, interrupted cuts without proper setup, or drop impacts that can cause chipping or fracture.
