The HERTEL 16704512 is a screw machine length drill bit sized to letter W (0.386 inches decimal) with a 135-degree split-point tip ground from solid carbide. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which improves rigidity and reduces deflection when drilling in tight spaces or on production machines. The slow spiral flute geometry controls chip evacuation in difficult-to-machine materials. A bright, uncoated finish keeps the cutting edge clean and allows easy visual inspection for wear. This bit is intended for machining professionals and toolroom technicians working on CNC screw machines, lathes, and drill presses.
This drill bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in hard and abrasive workpiece materials including cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and tool steel. The solid carbide construction handles the hardness and heat generated in these materials better than high-speed steel alternatives. Its straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet holders commonly found in screw machine setups and manual machine tools. The compact overall length makes it especially practical for short-travel spindles and gang-drill fixtures.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks and straight-shank collet holders accepting a 0.1495-inch shank diameter. Suitable for screw machines, CNC lathes, drill presses, and gang-drill fixtures requiring a screw machine length bit in the letter W size range.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the spindle fully powered down and locked out per applicable machine safety procedures. Ensure the chuck or collet is clean and free of chips before seating the shank, and torque the chuck key or collet nut to the machine manufacturer's specification. Solid carbide bits are brittle compared to high-speed steel — avoid side loading, interrupted cuts without proper feed-rate adjustment, or dropping the bit on hard surfaces. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace at first sign of chipping or excessive wear.
