The HERTEL 16704447 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding industrial applications. Sized at Letter P (0.3230 inches decimal equivalent), this bit is ground from solid carbide and features a 135-degree split-point geometry that reduces walking and minimizes thrust force on entry. With an overall length of 2-15/16 inches and a flute length of 1-11/16 inches, the stub-length profile delivers the rigidity needed when drilling tough alloys. The two-flute slow spiral configuration promotes controlled chip evacuation in gummy or stringy materials. The bright uncoated finish maintains tight dimensional tolerances directly off the grind.
This drill bit is engineered for use in machining operations where workpiece materials include cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and tool steel. It is well suited for CNC machining centers, manual mills, and drill presses where short, rigid tooling reduces chatter and deflection. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard Jacobs-style chucks and collet systems. Machinists, toolroom operators, and maintenance technicians working in metalworking and fabrication environments are the primary users of this tooling.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or new installation solid carbide screw machine drill bit for use in any standard straight-shank chuck or collet system accepting a cylindrical shank at the Letter P diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom technicians using a standard Jacobs chuck, ER collet, or equivalent workholding system. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and power is locked out before changing tooling. Verify chuck or collet bore is clean and free of chips before seating the shank to prevent runout. Solid carbide tooling is brittle — avoid side loads and interrupted cuts unless the setup is confirmed rigid.
