The HERTEL 16704355 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding industrial and machining applications. Built from solid carbide, this bit delivers the rigidity and wear resistance required when cutting hard workpiece materials. It features a 135-degree split-point geometry that reduces walking and minimizes thrust at the start of the cut. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks and quick-change holders. At 1-15/16 inches overall length, the screw machine length profile keeps the tool close to the spindle for maximum rigidity. A licensed machinist or tool-and-die technician typically installs and runs this bit on CNC machining centers, drill presses, or manual lathes.
This drill bit is sized at wire gauge number 28, equivalent to 0.1405 inches decimal. The slow spiral flute geometry and bright uncoated finish make it well suited for chip evacuation in materials that work-harden or generate built-up edge. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and tool steel. The 5/16-inch flute length is appropriate for shallow-hole applications typical of screw machine and production drilling work.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine length drill bit for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks, collet holders, and quick-change tooling systems that accept a 0.1405-inch shank diameter.
Installation and operation of solid carbide drill bits should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before changing tooling. Solid carbide is brittle compared to high-speed steel — avoid side loading, interrupted cuts beyond the tool rating, or dropping the bit on hard surfaces. Verify proper speeds and feeds for the specific workpiece material before starting the cut, as excessive feed rate is the leading cause of carbide drill breakage.
