The HERTEL 16692196 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasion-resistant materials. Built from solid carbide in material grade C2 and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit delivers extended tool life and reduced cutting friction compared to standard high-speed steel alternatives. It measures 2-13/16 inches overall length with a 5/16 inch diameter and features a 135-degree split point that self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch. The parallel web configuration and slow spiral flute geometry are optimized for chip evacuation in tough workpiece materials. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and industrial maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This bit is intended for drilling cast iron, nickel alloys, stainless steel, titanium alloys, and tool steel. Screw machine length geometry makes it well suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and screw machines where a shorter, more rigid drill body is needed for precision hole-making in dense or work-hardening materials. The right-hand cut and straight-cylindrical shank allow direct chuck mounting without adapters. Maximum drilling depth is 2.75 inches, making it appropriate for through-holes and moderate blind-hole applications in production and maintenance settings.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use screw machine drill bit for production and maintenance drilling applications in cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and tool steel workpieces.
This drill bit is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians in drill chucks or collet holders on drill presses, mills, or CNC machining centers. Always ensure the machine is fully powered down and the spindle is locked before changing tooling. Verify chuck or collet bore matches the straight-cylindrical shank diameter before tightening. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material even though this bit does not feature through-coolant capability, as external coolant application extends tool life in stainless steel and titanium alloys.
