The HERTEL 1001174 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPG221 style, designed for use in single-point turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a triangular insert shape with a 60-degree included angle and carries a multi-layer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN for extended wear resistance and thermal stability. The inscribed circle measures 0.25 inches (1/4 inch), insert length is 0.4331 inches (approximately 11 mm), and insert thickness is 0.125 inches (1/8 inch). The corner radius is 0.016 inches (1/64 inch). It is part of the HERTEL KENDEX series and is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10 units. Machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments install this insert type.
This insert is suited for turning applications on ferrous workpiece materials, with a primary material grade designation of P (steel) and a secondary designation of M (stainless steel). It is rated for a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). The neutral hand orientation allows flexible use in both conventional and some specific tool holder configurations. It is commonly used in medium to finish turning passes where dimensional consistency and surface finish are priorities. Designed as a replacement-style turning insert for TPG221 seat tool holders that accept triangular inserts with a 0.25 inch inscribed circle and clamp-style retention. Compatible tool holders must conform to TPG221 pocket geometry with P clearance and G tolerance specifications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine powered down and the spindle locked before changing inserts. Ensure the tool holder pocket is clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the appropriate clamp torque per the tool holder manufacturer specifications and verify insert seating before resuming cutting operations. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable machine guarding standards when working near cutting tooling.
